Based on Hawthorne's brief sojourn in Brook Farm, a socialist community active between 1841 and 1947, The Blithedale Romance offers a powerful treatment of the ideological and political possibilities of the Reform and Utopian movement of the first half of the 19^th century in America. The paper explores how Hawthorne's understanding of Utopia is revealed through the complex interplay of mesmerism, pastoral drama and the Golden Age myth.
