Liang Zongdai's translation of Shakespeare's Sonnets adheres to the principle of using "twelve Chinese characters divided into five beats" to construct the line of each of his translated sonnets. This principle is quite similar to that of "replacement of the English foot with a Chinese pause or word group", but there are some slight differences in the way of dividing "beats" and "pauses". Constructed on this principle, viz. twelve characters divided into five beats for each line, Liang's translation appears to be well uniform in form, fairly strict with the metrical pattern, and quite perfect with the rhyme scheme, though there remain some defects and miscarriages. Taken as a whole, Liang's translation, faithful to the original and with a unification of form and content, conveys vividly the poetic charm and vigor of Shakespeare's sonnets. Liang's translation is entitled to be a superb recreation based on his poetic and translation theories.
