Objective To measure the levels of plasma endothelin (ET), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), angiotensionⅡ (AngⅡ), calcitonin gene related peptide (cGRP) in essential hypertension (EH) and to investigate their clinical implications. Methods Immunoradiometric assay was used to measure the plasma peptides levels in 84 EH patients, classified into three groups according to diastolic blood pressure, and 36 normal subjucts. Results The levels of plasma ET, ANP, and AngⅡ in patients with mild, morderate, serious hypertension were significantly higher, but the plasma cGRP level was lower than those of controls. The levels of plasma ET, ANP and AngⅡ were positively correlated with mean artery pressure (MAP) ( r =0.4899, P < 0.001 ; r =0.5786, P < 0.001 ; r =0.3288, P <0.01), but the cGRP was not correlated with MAP ( r = -0.06 , P >0.05). Conclusion The plasma peptides may play an important role in EH.
