The Flood - and - Gourd Myth popular in Yunnan has three stories of flood, brother-sister marriage, and human birth from gourd. It is the product of cross - cultural communication and contacts among various ethnic peoples. It was first originated from the flood myth of the Duyu people in the Shu Kingdom, reflecting the struggle of man against nature. Second, it came from the myth of flood and brother- sister marriage of the Zhnti people, revealing the reflections of the defeated Duyu people fleeing southward on the time of "the people with eyes up- ward", and expressing their hope for a new era. The myth of flood, brother - sister marriage, and gourd, which was originated from the ancient Ailao Mountain area and was subsequently introduced into the ethnic groups of Yun- nan, highlights the idea of brotherhood among all the ethnic peoples. The Flood - and - Gourd Myth of the Indian - Myanmar Naga people implies that their ancestors moved out of Yunnan probably in the 7th century. During the course, they went by the area of the Wa ethnic people.
