摘要
尽管李约瑟对中国古代科学技术史的研究做出了杰出的贡献,但由于对"科学"与"技术"的分际不清,使其所确立的学术目标出现了某种程度的偏差,从而引发了学术界至今纠缠不清的"李约瑟难题"。要回答这一难题,首先必须厘清"科学"与"技术"的不同内涵,进而对儒家的"实用理性精神"、道家的"相对主义"和"不可知论",以及道教的"经验主义"传统对科学事业的制约作用进行必要的反省和认识。
Joseph Needham made a great contribution to the study of the history of ancient Chinese science and technology;however,his academic target had some windage due to his blurring of the distinction between science and technology and therefore there has been a Needham's Grand Question that has not been answered well.For the answer to this question,what should be done firstly is to make clear the different connotations of the different concepts,that is,science and technology,and to have the necessary reflections on and recognition of the restrictions of science imposed by Confucian utilitarian rationalism,Taoist relativism and agnosticism,and religious Taoist empiricism.
