This paper tries to make a comparative study of word order between English and German. English and German both belong to West-Germanic branch, the Indo-European language family, but the two kindred languages do have remarkable differences in their respective word order. From the author's experience of language learning, the paper puts this comparative study of word order from the angle of language acquisition, i.e. to study German as a third language from the perspective of English as a second language. After the literary review of some representative remarks and statistics that deal with word order of the languages of the world, the author of this paper makes a comparison between English and German through various examples. By comparing the two languages the author generalizes the differences between relatively fixed word order in English and relatively free word order in German with explanation for such differences.
