Daniel Defoe' s Robinson Crusoe generally heads the list of modern fiction. Focusing on Robinson Crusoe, it tells his experiences of ignoring his father' s warning, going on voyage, being cast ashore, living alone on the uninhabited island for 28 years and finally returning to England. Using different orders of biblical archetypes, the novel contains a very intricate labyrinth of symbolic significance. This thesis argues that the archetypal interpretation is a necessary procedure in criticism, and a valid interpretation of the text is helpful for the revelation of the writer' s perspective of religion, even that of the whole society in the Age of Enlightenment.
