Of all novels carrying description of sex, The Plum in the Golden Vase by Lanling Xiaoxiao Sheng and Lady Chatterley' s Lover by D. H. Lawrence, respectively from China and Britain, are the most influential and controversial. But there is a distinctive difference in the description of sex between these two novels, just due to different eras and cultures in which they were produced and to the difference in the two authors' ideas about sex and artistic accomplishment. The Plum in the Golden Vase offers male-centered descriptions of the indulgent, lewd and abnormal sex, and embodies a worldly spirit of flesh carnival with an emphasis on the purpose of abstention from lust and expostulation on kindness, thus reflecting a contradiction between the author' s purpose and his lustful and leching description of sex. In contrast, Lady Chatterley' s Lover ves a mainly female-centered description of the natural, beautiful, reasonable and sacred sex, highlights the vitality of the unified soul and flesh, thor' s humanist spirit in his conception of sex and and life and passion, and thus reflects the auaestheticist tendency in his description of sex.
