While many authors in China and the West seek to discover a Chinese nationalism by examining China’s authentic roots, this article argues that identity is determined by its limits. The author explores the concept of limits to argue that borders in China are not just territorial, but also cultural and political. Chinese nationalism is defined at the border between domestic and international politics. To argue this point, the author examines controversies in Chinese texts surrounding the discourse on the China threat. The author finds that the texts do more than simply refute the criticisms from abroad; they are engaged in identity politics by constructing a border between China’s domestic and international politics. Thus the negative images of the PRC that are continually circulated in the Chinese texts serve to construct a Chinese identity through the logic of estrangement. Finally, the author concludes that since realism has dominated the “rise of China” debate, it is necessary to use critical IR theory to open up space for a complex discussion of China’s identity politics.
