摘要
英语习语往往有着极强的文化特色,如何合理地把它们翻译成汉语,决非易事。本文试图将奈达的功能对等理论引入习语翻译中,认为其比较适用于两种习语的翻译:1)英语习语和汉语习语形式和内容都比较吻合;2)英语习语和汉语习语表达形式不同,但所承载的信息量基本相同。两者互译,能达到奈达所说的功能对等,既源语读者与译语读者反应完全或基本一致。但功能对等理论在翻译文化习语尤其是具有标志性文化习语时,也有它的局限性。
A large number of English idioms convey the distinctive cultural characteristics of the English- speaking nations, thus to find an appropriate Chinese version for each of them is not easy. This article illustrates how the theory “functional equivalence”, originated by Nida, can function well for the translation of the following two kinds of idioms: 1 ) the English idioms and Chinese idioms match well both in forms and in information; 2) the English idioms and Chinese idioms are different in forms, whereas what they inform is corresponding with each other. To inter-translate them can arouse the same response upon the original receptors and the receptors of the translated text. However, the theory “functional equivalence” is not suitable for the translation of those English idioms which represent the distinguishing quality of the culture of the English- speaking nations, thus the strategy of “cultural duplicate” needs to be applied.
