《新世纪汉英大词典》的编纂原则体现了现代功能主义语言学的语言观,在收词范围上突出了“描写性”原则,注重词语在实际语境中的意义和其多功能性的特点。词典对词项的概念意义、搭配意义、语体意义、语法意义等多种功能意义进行了精当的阐释,使之更加符合读者的实际需要。
The guiding principle for compiling A New Century Chinese-English Dictiontary is characterized by the functionalist view of language ,which is reflected in the ＂descriptive＂ feature of the dictionary in its vocabulary coserage, the emphasis on meaning in context and the recognition of multifunctionality of words. The dictionary gives appropriate interpretation of variety of meanings for the word emries （viz. conceptual.stylistic, granmatical, and collocational meanings）, making it better suited to the practical needs of the readers.
