Postmodernism is one of the main literary schools in the second half of the 20th century in the west. Originated in the 50s,it reached its prime in the 60s and 70s, and began to decline in the 80s. Thematically, postmodernist literature is inclinde to pessimism and nihilistic philosophy, and formally it tends to be unconventional and novel. Generally speaking, it is characterized by senses of shallowness, uncertainty, and absurdity. Postmodernism is the unavoidable product of the social, cultural and economic conditions in the west after World War Ⅱ. Though defective in thematic contents, it helped expand literary expression with its artistic experimentation.
