摘要
什么是翻译单位?一些语言学翻译理论家试图把意义单位和翻译单位相提并论。把意义单位作为翻译单位是一个令译者感到棘手、难以运作的概念。本文试图从语义和认知角度重新审视并定义翻译单位,着重分析探讨从深层到表层、从意图到意图裁体的认知路径。通过对翻译单位的路径分析,本文提出,逻辑素语义关系明晰,意义和功能都具有稳定性,因而是理想的翻译单位界定要素。
The unit of translation has often been equated with the unit of meaning, yet this linguistically inspired understanding tends to create more problems for practitioners of translation than it solves. Looking into the issues involved in the confounding of these two concepts from a semantic-cognitive perspective, the present paper calls attention to the pathway from the deep structure to the surface, and from the motivation to the motivated form, as a key component of the translating process. The author suggests in conclusion that we see UT instead as a logical element, one that underlies the textual surface and is characterized by its semantic clarity and its functional stability.
