摘要
《红楼梦》杨宪益和霍克斯两种英文全译本,各有所长。文章以小说第一回文本为例,分析两位译者采取的翻译策略。杨译偏重直译,保存了具有中国文化内涵的许多意象和表达。霍译结合直译、意译以及归化、异化策略,为读者呈现了精彩的译文。
The two complete English versions of Hongloumeng,translated by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes,show their respective merits.This paper,based on an analysis of the translation rendered from the first chapter of the original work,probes the strategies adopted by the two translators.Yang’s version,to some degree,stresses literal translation and tries to preserve many images and phrases particular to the Chinese cultural tradition.By comparison,Hawkes’s version adopts an eclectic method,combining free and literary translation as well as domesticating and foreignizing strategies to present English readers an exquisite translation.
