近代沙市素有“小汉口”之称,商业发达。在近代荆沙地区社会变迁的过程中,商会组织无疑扮演了十分重要的角色,不断影响着荆沙地区社会变迁的方向。作为政府在基层治理的代理人,荆沙商会利用其独有的地方关系网络,对于当时社会的各项冲突进行调控,引领着荆沙地区近代社会风气的走向,不断革新着当时陈旧的荆沙社会,引领其走向现代化商业城市。
