Objective To investigate the effect of maternal serum leptin level during pregnancy on the neonates' growth and the relationship between the leptin levels in maternal blood, umbilical cord blood and amniotic fluid. Methods Two hundred and twenty -four pregnant women were included in the study, and serum leptin concentrations were measured with the RIA method. After delivery, these subjects were divided into two groups according to the neonates' gender, and relationships between maternal serum leptin and neonates' gender and growth were analyzed. In 32 subjects, the leptin concentrations in maternal blood, umbilical cord blood and amniotic fluid were measured and compared. Results In the subjects studied, the serum leptin level correlated significantly to the body mass index, body weight, abdomen circumference and diastolic blood pressure(P <0.05 or P <0.01). The maternal serum leptin level also correlated significantly to their body weight, body mass index, abdomen circumference and diastolic blood pressure (P <0.01 or P < 0. 05). No difference of serum leptin level was found between the two groups. At delivery, the leptin concentration in maternal blood was higher than that in umbilical cord, and the latter was higher than that in amniotic fluid (P <0. 01). Positive correlation was found between the leptin levels in maternal blood and amniotic fluid (P<0. 05). Conclusion It is similar to the non -pregnant persons; serum leptin levels of pregnant women correlate to their body weight and the body mass index during pregnancy, and they also correlate to the abdomen circumference and diastolic blood pressure. The leptin concentrations are significantly different among maternal blood, umbilical cord and amniotic fluid, and the leptin level in maternal blood correlates to that in amniotic fluid. The neonates' gender may not affect the maternal blood leptin level during pregnancy.
