The author examines the Song Dynasty Jian Kiln 'oil - drop' (youdi) and 'altered glaze' (yaobian ) Chinese porcelain regarded in Japan as National Treasures and looks at why Song and Yuan Chinese porcelain articles are regarded in Japan as Japanese National Treasures . The author also examines in outline the history and present situation of Japanese studies of Chinese ceramics. Although Japan has a strict system governing the definition of national treasures, eight Chinese Song and Yuan Dynasty porcelain articles are defined as National Treasures. These are 'oil - drop' glaze (called zhegu - ban or francolin partridge marking glaze in Chinese texts) and 'altered glaze' (a term for a special type of ' oil - drop' glaze). From the Kamakura period onwards, the Japanese have an aesthetic outlook based on elegant simplicity, and these objects are also highly revered in the Japanese tea ceremony.
