摘要
作为一个艺术批评家,罗斯金认为伟大的艺术首先应是道德的,艺术的最终目的是使人领悟如何去过一种健康的生活,从而赋予审美一种实用的(理智的,尤其是道德的)功利性。对于审美中道德功利性的关注,使罗斯金转向关注人群社会,进而展开对社会丑陋的抨击。本文所讨论的正是他从审美到社会批评的发展轨迹。
As an art critic, John Ruskin assumes that great art is allied with morality and the ultimate object of art is to initiate human beings to a healthy life, and thus ascribes a practical (intellectual, especially moral) utility to the aesthetic judgement. This emphasis on moral aspect in aesthetic judgement leads to his concern for the society and people and results in a severe criticism on the ugliness in the society. This thesis is a discussion on Ruskin's transition from aesthetic criticism to social criticism.
