Objective To study the effect of high vitamin C and vitamin E intake on serum level of soluble vascular cell adhesion molecules (sVCAM)-1 in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods Serum level of sVCAM-1 was measured by ELISA before and after vitamin supplement in 60 patients with type 2 diabetes. The correlations between sVCAM-1 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, endothelin (ET), HbA 1c , fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, immunoreactive insulin were determined respectively, and 20 patients served as controls. Results Serum level of sVCAM-1 decreased after high vitamin C and vitamin E intake, especially in the combined vitamins group; there were positive correlations between sVCAM-1 and TNF-α, ET, HbA 1c respectively. Conclusion High vitamin C and vitamin E intake can decrease the serum level of sVCAM-1 in type 2 diabetic patients and show synergistic action, the mechanism is probably due to their antioxidation and antiglycosylation, resulting in lowered levels of HbA 1c , TNFα and ET.
