After the Opium War in 1840,China gradually became a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society.Tibet, located in China’s Southwest border, also became the target in the competition of big powers. This is manifested in The New York Times’reports on Tibet from the mid-19th century to the end of World WarⅡ.In this period of nearly 100 years, the reports covered not only important historical events, such as the explorations of imperialist countries in Tibet, the British Empire’s invasion into Tibet, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama’s death and reincarnation, and the Fourteenth Dalai Lama’s installation, but also natural scenery, local conditions and customs of Tibet. These reports reflected the basic position of the United States on the political status of China’s Tibet in this period, that is,the United States identified Tibet as a part of China’s territory and opposed British aggression against Tibet.
