In the semi-autobiographical novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit,Jeanette Winterson depicts a selfish and cold mother that is widely different from the loving mother in traditional sense. However, the reason why Winterson depicts such an unconventional mother is not just for accusing, but for unfolding the trauma under the selfishness and coldness by revealing the mother 's traumatic symptoms, such as avoidance, numbness and obsession. It is further revealed that the mother's trauma stems from her restraint of homosexual orientation on one hand, and the World War II's transformation of the spiritual outlook and the social circumstances in Britain on the other hand. By introducing a mother image with deep trauma,Winterson reveals the tough situation of the homosexuals in 20 th century, and expresses her reflection on wars and her counter culture thought.
