Background: Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 plays an important role in tumorigenesis, progression and apoptosis in many kinds of tumors, but its role in esophageal carcinoma and the correlation between TGF-β1 and tumor angiogenesis is as yet unclarified. Aims: To investigate the expression of TGF-β1 in esophageal carcinoma and its relation to tumor angiogenesis. Methods: Immunohisto-chemistry method was used to detect the expression of TGF-β1 and intratumoral microvessel density (MVD) in 45 cases of esophageal squamous carcinomatous tissues and 10 normal esophageal tissues. The relationship between TGF-β1 expression and clinicopathological parameters, prognosis and intratumoral MVD in esophageal carcinoma was analyzed by SPSS 10.0 statistic software. Results: No abnormality was seen in the mucosal cells of normal esophageal tissues. TGF-β1 expression was identified in 77.8% (35/45) of patients with esophageal carcinoma, and the mean value of intratumoral MVD was 15.58. The expression of TGF-β1 was not associated with any of the clinicopathological parameters as well as the prognosis of esophageal carcinoma. A significant correlation was noted between TGF-β1 expression and intratumoral MVD (r = 0.428, P= 0.003). Conclusions: The expression of TGF-β1 is associated with tumorigenesis, but not the tumor progression in esophageal squamous carcinoma. TGF-β1 may be one of the factors in the angiogenesis of esophageal squamous carcinoma.
