Modern Western philosophers regard rationality as the essence of man. On this understanding, man has become an empty and abstract existence, which is beyond time and space,non-hstorical and decultural. Herder believes that this abstract understanding of human nature is fictional and cannot really explain the richness and specificity of human nature in reality. On the basis of reflecting on this concept of human nature, Herder pioneered a new concept of human nature generalized as'Expressionism' by Isaiah Berlin and Charles Taylor. This new concept holds that the essence of human beings is not endowed by nature but created and formed through their interaction with the outside world in their existence and therefore is deeply rooted in the world they live in and the culture they belong to.This expressionist view of human nature is mainly embodied in Herder’s philosophy of language and is based on his ontology and epistemology.
