摘要
思果在中文译坛可算享负盛名。然而,评量思果译品的专文不多。本文拟探讨思果未研究翻译前的译品,从《力争上游》《源远流长》《天生英哲》三书中甄选译文,扬榷得失,藉此了解他早年的翻译手法与其翻译观的关系。本文指出他早年的翻译手法与其翻译观主要异于五端:“前置词”“不定冠词”“后缀”“复数”“主语省略”。研究所得,或可俾便日后全面考察思果治译的历程,而对研究译文之为译文的特质更或不无助益。
The aim of this paper is to understand the relationship between the translation approaches of Frederick Tsai and his early translations. Selections of his early translations will be assessed against his translation approaches in order to investigate the relationship between his translation strategies in his early translations and the translation approaches that he preached. It will be argued that inconsistencies are found mainly in five aspects: the use of prepositions,indefinite articles,suffixes,plurals,and omission of subjects in the target text. The findings will probably be conducive to a full corpus-based investigation into Tsai’s early translations and to the comparison of his early translations with his works of translation in his later career,shedding light on his sophistication of translation as a craft and perhaps even on the universal features of translation.
