Biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) is one of the most widely used and important parameters for organic pollution and is estimated with aerobic microorganisms as the catalyst for the biochemical degradation of organic matter in wastewater by determining the amount of oxygen required for this process. However, the conventional test is not suitable for process control and monitoring where a rapid feedback is desirable. To develop alternative test methods which could rapidly and adequately replace this parameter, a microbial biosensor based on the combination of immobilized microorganisms and oxygen electrode for BOD estimation was first developed by Karube et al. Since then, the BOD biosensors were, well studied. The progress of BOD microbial biosensors and commercial BOD biosensor systems was reviewed. The efforts to get agreeable results between the BOD biosensor measurement and the conventional method were also discussed.
