Case grammar is proposed by Charles J. Fillmore, who holds that a sentence is composed of verbs or verbal forces and their cases which condition each other. Under this theory Peter Newmark suggests that in analyzing and translating a sentence the translator should locate the key verbs and verbal forces in source text and comprehend the logical semantic relationship between verbs and their cases for the purpose of translating them by the regulations of target language. This paper applies the case grammar translation theory by Peter Newmark to the translation of verbal forces and case gaps in EST and comes to the conclusion that verbal forces are better to be translated into Chinese verbs, while case gaps should be filled in according to their syntactic and semantic functions. Thus, accurate transferring of information of science and technology can be achieved.
