The phenomenon of disproportional expansion of urbanized areas into undeveloped land is generally called urban dispersion or urban sprawl. The majority of planners have expressed concerns about urban dispersion's consequences, especially its economic coasts, environment impacts, and social inequality. In order to understand the causal mechanisms of this 'undesired' development. This study will center round the nature of urban planning in post-Fordist and postmodern age, the general theoretical discussion will associate with an empirical case study of Great Toronto Area. The objective of this paper is to explore new perspectives to understand urban dispersion in North America and their potential significance to urban China research.
