Abdulrazak Gurnah,in The Last Gift,employs delicate prose and masterful narrative techniques to portray the complex figure of the aphasic within an immigrant family.The protagonist Abbas’s silence is not only a manifestation of his identity crisis but also a symbol of his silent resistance against multiple societal pressures.Gurnah uses silence as a narrative device to delve into the internal struggles of the aphasic,skillfully revealing their covert quest for selfhood and resistance to oppression.Through his unique depiction of silence,quietude,and defiance,Gurnah exposes the tragic fate of the diaspora,offering a fresh perspective on the mechanisms of identity construction and resistance in migrant literature.This approach not only endows the aphasic with profound symbolic meaning but also enhances the emotional tension and narrative depth of the novel.
