The concept of things in the history of Western art can be examined from the perspective of the relationship between art and reality, and need to be further addressed within the theoretical framework of ontological reflections on things and art. From the doctrine of mimesis(imitation)in ancient Greece to Heidegger’s and Danto’s discussions of things, one can delineate a line of development, namely from the mimetic things of lower ontological rank in Greek metaphysics,to the contextualized things in Heidegger’s phenomenology, and further to the inherent relationality of things and the objectification of things. This trajectory points to the possibility of a vivid and dynamic understanding of thinghood.
