Theory of mind affected the development of empathy, interpersonal communication and social integration of individuals with hearing impairment(HI).The processing mechanism of theory of mind was the focus of researchers. However, there were some controversies about the processing mechanism of individual theory of mind. Some studies supported that semantic processing played a crucial role in individuals'reasoning about others'mental states, whereas some studies suggest that working memory is the key factor in the processing of theory of mind. Therefore, this study took 81 college students with HI and 81 normal college students adopted the dual-task experimental paradigm to examine the role of working memory in the theory of mind of college students with HI by asking them to understand the story content by semantic processing and to reason about the mental state of the story protagonist in a specified period of time, and at the same time to perform a working memory task. The results showed that for college students with HI,the load of reasoning about others'mental states was more serious, and semantic processing was not enough to support their reasoning about others'mental states. Therefore, applying a heavy working memory load during the stage of reasoning about others'mental states could lead to the failure of reasoning about others'mental states for college students with HI.
