摘要
认知副词是传递态度和评价的主要手段之一。本研究以400篇语言学和石油工程博士学位论文英语摘要为研究对象,从认知副词及其四个维度——确信、态度、频率和言据,对中美博士生使用认知副词的情况展开跨语言和跨学科对比研究。研究发现:(1)中美博士生在认知副词四维度上的使用频率分布不均衡,频率最高的是确信,最低的是言据;(2)中美博士生对认知副词及频率和言据的使用频率没有跨语言差异,但中国博士生显著多用确信、少用态度;(3)中国博士生对认知副词及确信、态度和频率的使用存在学科差异,而美国博士生对认知副词及四个维度的使用均无学科差异;(4)词汇丰富程度基本一致,但中国博士生表现出中介语特征,对于某些副词的语义内涵、语用功能和语域特征的掌握有待提高。该研究结果对我国英语学术论文写作和教学有一定的启示作用。
s of doctoral dissertations in linguistics and petroleum engineering written by non-native(Chinese)doctoral candidates and their native English counterparts(American)from an overall perspective and in its four dimensions—certainty,attitude,usuality,evidentiality.The results show that 1)concerning the standard frequency in the four dimensions,there exist uneven distributions in the samples,with certainty enjoying the highest frequency and evidentiality the least;2)there are no significant differences interculturally regarding the use of epistemic adverbs as well as the dimensions of usuality and evidentiality with the exception of certainty and attitude respectively;3)there are significant differences between disciplines in terms of frequency of epistemic adverbs as well as the dimensions of certainty,attitude and usuality among Chinese doctoral candidates,yet no interdisciplinary differences in the overall use and the four dimensions among Americans;4)Chinese and Americans show similar lexical richness on epistemic adverbs,but Chinese candidates seem to have inappropriately used some epistemic adverbs in semantic connotation,pragmatic function and register feature,which demonstrates the tendency of interlanguage.The findings will shed light on English academic writing and EAP teaching in China.
