摘要
美国传教士吴板桥翻译了《西游记》第九回和第十回,以《金角龙王》为名出版了《西游记》,为西方第一个英文单行本。对于理解西方关于晚清中国形象的建构以及《西游记》在晚清中西文化交汇碰撞中的传播具有一定启发意义。但吴板桥节选译本对原著主题、结构和人物形象等方面进行了大量改写与加工,丧失了原著艺术性,使其成为矮化中国形象和服务于教义传播的文本工具。
American missionary Samuel Isett Woodbridge or Wu Banqiao translated the ninth and tenth chapters of Journey to the West which was titled The Golden Horned Dragon King. This was the first single edition translation of the great master piece, Journey to the West, that was published in the west. It has enlightening significance for understanding the construction of China’s image and the dissemination of the Chinese novel Journey to the West in the late Qing Dynasty when Chinese and Western cultures met. However, Wu’s excerpted translation has rewritten and processed the theme, structures and characters of the original work to a great extent, leading to the lose of the artistry value of the original work and making it a textual tool that dwarfs the image of China and serves as the dissemination of religious teachings.
