A Question of Power,a masterpiece by Botswana author Bessie Head, has ever been nominated for the Booker Prize, the highest award in contemporary English-language fiction. The novel portrays the protagonist,Elizabeth,as an insane person, who is often in a state of alternating reality and hallucination, and whose insanity reflects the disconnect and dislocation between her individual life and social existence. The transformation, overlap and iteration of spatial forms constructed in the novel,as Elizabeth’s transition from the racial space of South Africa to the illusory space of heterotopia and then back to the utopia space of reality,on the one hand, shows Elizabeth’s journey from mental repression, madness to peace, and on the other hand, reproduces her self-cognitive process from identity confusion, identity crisis to identification. The novel’s artistic presentation of the survival dilemmas, spiritual dilemmas and identity problems of colored people through spatial narratives reflects Bessie Head’s profound cultural reflection on the African apartheid system, constructs the independent value of postcolonial writing in African indigenous literature, and provides new narrative strategies and aesthetic experiences for the"post-civilizational"narrative turn in African literature.
