In Goethe's oeuvre, both of his lyric cycles— "Roman Elegies"and"West-East Divan"—mark a breakthrough in his life and literary creation. The central combining point of the two is the creation of a foreign land as the site of erotic imaginations.By doing so,the space, desire and poetry are interlinked with each other. With Foucault's concept of heterotopies, this paper analyzes how these lyric texts engender such alternative spaces and what kind of poetological meanings are ascribed to them so as to offer a case study of spatial significations in literature.
