摘要
华人群体在近代新马区域文化构建发展过程里扮演了关键性的角色,尽管身处异域他乡的地域空间之中,却仍然保留着传统儒家思想仁爱待人的文化基因,近代南洋华侨从事的慈善义演活动成为延续此种民族品格的重要日常实践。本文以近现代新马地区重要的出版物《南洋商报》为考察中心,力求完整全面地揭示近代南洋华侨慈善义演活动的完整面貌。应急赈灾、济贫扶困与爱国救亡是近代新马地区慈善义演的三大主题,在义演过程中,活动组织者相当偏好采取京剧、话剧与地方戏在内的三种不同戏剧类型充当演出的载体。严密的组织管理、大众的广泛参与和浓重的爱国主义意识则成为南洋华侨慈善义演活动整体呈现的三个特质。可以说,近代南洋华侨慈善义演成为同时包含儒家传统精神与现代革命意识、东方戏曲文化与西方话剧艺术、游子乡愁情绪与救亡图存时代焦虑等多重矛盾体的文化场域,本质上指向的是新马社会现代转型过程里的某种文化症候。
Chinese communities played a key role in the development of regional culture in modern Singapore and Malaysia.Though in an alien land,overseas Chinese retained the cultural gene of Confucian benevolence,and their charity performance was an important daily activity for the continuation of this national character.Taking Nanyang Business Daily,an important publication in modern Singapore and Malaysia,as the research object,this article attempts to reveal the overall landscape of overseas Chinese’s charity performance in modern Nanyang.Disaster relief,poverty relief and national salvation were the three major themes of charity performance,in which three different dramatic styles were preferred,that is,Peking Opera,modern drama and local opera.Strict organization and management,extensive public participation and a strong sense of patriotism were the three characteristics of the charity performance as a whole.The charity performance of modern Nanyang overseas Chinese became a cultural field with multiple contradictions,between traditional Confucian spirit and modern revolutionary consciousness,between oriental opera culture and western drama,and between wanderers’homesickness and the anxiety of national salvation,which quintessentially revealed a cultural symptom in the modern transformation of Singapore and Malaysia.
