The Ribo Cemetery is a new-discovered cemetery composed of stone mound tombs in the Piyang-Dongga area in Zanda County,Ngari Prefecture,Tibet. From 2018 to 2019,the School of Archaeology and Museology at Sichuan University and other institutions excavated eight tombs dating from the 4th to the 1st century BCE,belonging to the“Pre-Tubo(Tibetan Empire)Era”or“Early Metal Age”according to Tibet Archaeology.Few and unevenly-distributed artifacts were unearthed from the tombs, mainly potteries.Human bones were also scarcely found in tombs, possibly due to the bone collecting custom for secondary burial, which is of great significance for understanding the diversity of early funeral customs in western Tibet. The widespread stone mound tombs have been found across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,Xinjiang,Mongolian Plateau,Central Asian Steppe, and Siberia area, embodying the cultural element of the northern steppe cultural system. The excavation also revealed the extensive exchanges and connections between western Tibet and surrounding areas.
