摘要
辛亥革命前十年间的“文明”观念具有一种悖论性内涵:一方面它意味着历史进化原则支配下的、以“自由”和“法律”为中心的政治文明,另一方面则意味着当时人不得不抗拒的强权主义,“文明排外”的呼声甚嚣尘上。就此而言,晚清知识分子所理解的“文明”,不是一种简单的“线性的文明”,而是一种“复线的文明”。“复线的文明”所呈现的两种“文明”内涵都是当时的强势话语,并在此后的历史演变中呈现出一种彼此否定的思想趋势。不过,在辛亥革命前十年间的那个特殊时代,它们并行于当时知识分子的思想世界中,构成了一种看似矛盾实则融洽的内涵。
The present author argues that the concept of civilization in the first decade of the twentieth century in China was paradoxical. On the one hand,it referred to the freedom-centric political civilization dominated by the historico-evolutionistic rule;it denoted machtpolitik that should be resisted resolutely,on the other hand. The duality of this concept might reveal that late Qing ’s intellectuals treated civilization as something multilinear rather than something unilinear. This indicated that then there was a harmony garbed in contradiction in the intellectual world of China.
