Quantitative linguistics is an important branch of modern linguistics and a hot spot in the era of big data. The related theories and laws of Zipf, the founder of the discipline, are widely used and greatly influential in language teaching and research. However, few scholars have examined the source of this scientific research, thus leaving a gap in the study of the development of linguistic thoughts that affects its practical application and the estimation of its future development.Using first-hand literature and archived historical materials, this study aimed to overcome the lack of elaboration on the birth of quantitative linguistics in the history of linguistics by exploring the German origin of Zipf’s thoughts. The study revealed the inseparable connection between the development of mainstream linguistic theories and that of quantitative linguistics through an analysis of Zipf’s academic connections and the academic activities in Berlin during his stay in Germany. This study demonstrated that quantitative linguistics should neither blindly pursue the accuracy of natural science, nor ignore the social and humanistic features of the language.
