富则思安与富而思进:绩效期望顺差对企业创新的非线性影响

Contentment with Wealth and Progress Driven by Wealth:the Curvilinear Impact of Positive Performance-Aspiration Gap on Corporate Innovation

摘要 在创新驱动战略日益成为企业发展和综合国力提升重要支撑的背景下,基于2007—2018年沪深两市的A股上市公司的面板数据,使用固定效应模型实证检验了绩效期望顺差对企业创新的影响。研究发现:由于高管自信、失败风险和冗余资源三种机制在绩效期望顺差不同水平上截然不同的作用,企业同时表现出“富则思安”和“富而思进”的行为模式,绩效期望顺差对企业创新的影响呈现为先负向后正向的U型结构;由于年龄引致的组织惯性存在,相较于年龄较小的企业,年龄较大企业的绩效期望顺差和企业创新之间的U型关系更为平缓。研究结果不仅有利于从企业绩效反馈视角系统剖析企业创新的动机,还对企业和政府部门具有一定的实践启示。 Under the background that innovation-driven strategy has become an important support for enterprise development and comprehensive national strength improvement,the impact of positive performance-aspiration gap on corporate innovation is tested by using a fixed effect model,based on samples of Chinese firms listed on Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2007 to 2018.The results show that due to the distinct roles of executive self-confidence,failure risk and redundant resources at different levels of positive performance-expectation gap,firms show a behavior pattern of both contentment with wealth and progress driven by wealth.This U-shaped curve indicates that corporate innovation decreases at low level of positive performance-expectation gap,and increases at high level of positive performanceexpectation gap.And compared with younger enterprises,the U-shaped relationship is less pronounced for older firms due to the age-induced inertia.The results not only help to systematically analyze the motivation of corporate innovation from the perspective of performance feedback,but also provide several key implications for firms as well as governments.
