Cages is the early work of the Tanzanian-born British novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah. It tells the story of Hamid,an African young man who had left his hometown since childhood. He took the initiative to get out of self-isolation because of his longing for love.It seemed for him to have broken out of his self-constructed cage, however,he was in fact still in another predicament.By expressing the alienation and loneliness that Hamid could produce and the soul-searching questions it gave rise to about fragmented identities and the very meaning of'home',the author forces people to think over what created the cage that prevented Hamid from pursuing happiness,so as to show the plight of black ethnic groups under western colonial aggression and the irreparable harm they had suffered.
