Long before Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah became a 2021 Nobel Prize laureate,he wrote Desertion,a semi-autobiographical novel in 2005,which tells love tragedies among generations of Indian immigrants in Africa. Those stories unmask the reality that locals are vexed with the cross-racial problems related to cultural barriers.Themed on the basic core of abandonment, the novel casts sight on how colonialism impacts profoundly on local inhabitants through the stories of two families on Zanzibar Island.Interweaving problems of both culture and love,it deals with the issues related to the cultural unconscious such as colonialism, race, faith and gender, etc. The fourfold cultural unconscious not only reveals the historical issues of colonialism in Africa, but also provides African people with thoughts on how to survive in the post-colonial era.
