摘要
古语“画虎不成反类狗”究竟应该怎样来理解,到目前为止仍没有明确的答案。由于古人没有对“画虎不成反类狗”作注解,又没有直接相关的证据可以说明“画虎”的确切含义,所以现在只能在传世文献中找寻线索,给“画虎”作出一些可能的合理解释。一种可能就是,“画虎”就是指一般意义上的“描画”老虎。东汉以来已经有了在门户上画虎驱邪的风俗,所以“画虎不成反类狗”的“画虎”就是指“描画”真实的老虎形象,是完全有可能的。还有一种前人没有提出过的可能解释,就是把“画虎”的“画”理解为“书写”的意思。“虎”字与“犬”字的甲骨文和金文形体是很相像的,在甲骨文和金文时期,“虎”字写得不好,就写成了“犬”字,也是极有可能发生的事情。
There are no definite answers about how to explain the Chinese ancient saying“trying to draw a tiger and ending up with the likeness of a dog”,because of the lack of evidences to prove its real meaning.Based on some relevant ancient books,one of the possible explanations is that“trying to paint a tiger”really means painting a tiger,and the other explanation is that it means writing the word“tiger”.Because in inscriptions on bone or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty and those on ancient bronze objects of Yin and Zhou Dynasties,the Chinese characters“tiger”and“dog”look similar,therefore if the word tiger was written poorly it might be mistaken as the word dog.
