摘要
本研究以系统功能语言学相关理论为指导,从功能结构和语义关系两个方面对三个不同学科的专业英语词汇共性特征进行了探究。研究发现,不同学科的专业词汇以名词为主,在功能结构上都出现了“类别+事物”和“事物+限定”结构。这两种结构通常有六种体现形式,普遍存在于各个学科词汇里。在语义关系上都发现了“上下义”和“局部整体”组织关系,再一次验证了Halliday关于科学术语组织关系的阐述。本研究结果对于构建专业词汇术语的研究框架和专业英语词汇教学的开展具有重要的理论和实践意义。
This paper investigated the common features of English vocabulary for specific purpose of three different disciplinary areas,based on relevant theories of systemic functional linguistics.It is found that the vocabulary of different disciplinary fields,which are mainly nouns,all demonstrate two experiential structures:“classifier+thing”and“thing+qualifier”.The two structures are found to be realized mainly in six different ways,which universally appear in all three disciplinary vocabulary.In terms of semantic relationships,two basic relationships,“superordination”and“composition”,serving to connect different technical terms,are found to exist commonly in all three disciplinary vocabulary.This further verifies what Halliday has stated in his discovery of the semantic relationships among technical concepts in technical taxonomies.The results of present study are inspiring both to the construction of a framework to study vocabulary for specific purpose theoretically and to the teaching and learning of English for specific purpose in practical sense.
