The Secret River is a major literary contribution after Kate Grenville’s return after 2000 to the subject matters related to Australian colonial history. By reenacting the “first contact” between early white settlers and Australian aborigines, the novel aims to encourage the readers to reflect on the complex factors leading to the colonial violence. The novelist’s method of dealing with historical materials and her view of Aboriginal representation make the novel a new focus in the tumultuous History Wars in Australia. The controversy over it adds to the scope and depth of Australian collective cultural memory. The open warfare appears to be the struggle between novelists and historians for the right of interpreting history, but it is essentially an extension of the decades-long ideological conflicts in this country. Under the pressure of the conservative New Right, some historians tried to make compromise with the mainstream so as to regain their former status and influence in the public sphere. In the teeth of the storm Grenville did not flinch;her positive attitude must have inspired other writers who were committed to digging into Australia’s past.
