The consumption of potassium permanganate(KMnO_(4))is an important safety indicator for food contact paper/cardboard materials and products, demonstrating the content of substances that can be oxidized by KMnO_(4) during the migration from food contact material to soaking solution. In this study the back titration method was used to test the KMnO_(4) consumption in paper straws and various factors influencing the KMnO_(4) consumption in paper straws were discussed. The results showed that the KMnO_(4) consumption of paper with high ratio of bleached chemical thermal mechanical pulp was greater than that of its low-ratio counterpart. Paper with external sizing consumed more KMnO_(4)than that without sizing, the higher sizing agent content, the greater KMnO_(4) consumption. The KMnO_(4)consumption of paper straws increased as the number of layers and soaked area/volume ratio(S/V)increased. It was further showed that the paper straws base paper contained harmless reducing substances and their hydrolysates may migrate into the soaking solution and cause increased KMnO_(4)consumption,which required further study.
