In the fourth year of the Yuanding reign (113 BC),Emperor Wu of the Han restricted minting to central authorities.Three Offices of Shanglin were set to take charge of the minting of coinage.Several mint sites found at Xiangjiaxiang,Gaodipu,Wotouzhai, and Zhaolun, etc.in the Han Chang’an region probably belonged to the Three Offices of Shanglin,as suggested by a large quantity of unearthed clay coinage molds.Relief inscriptions in mirror image are found on the upper part of some models, which can be roughly divided into two categories according to the presence/absence of reign marks.Inscriptions on the models without reign marks can further be divided into six types. All inscribed models are classified and periodized based on the placement of sprues and vents, along with characteristics of models with reign marks. This study is helpful for understanding division of labor and technological changes within the Three Offices of Shanglin,as well as establishing dating criteria for both a large number of models without reign marks and wuzhu coinage.
