Buddhist Zen has had a profound influence on contemporary American writer Peter Matthiessen. From the first time he got to know Buddhist Zen to the time he died in 2014, Peter Mathiessen witnessed the existence of Buddhist Zen both in his writing and everyday life. The situation is that there are few relevant studies. From the perspective of traditional Eastern thought, this paper analyzes the oneness and harmony of Buddhist Zen and the way of epiphany through practicing without practice in The Snow Leopard(1978), which won him the National Book Award for nonfiction, and the Zen diary Nine Dragons: The Zen Journal of 1969—1982(1985), which recorded his Zen experience, and presents Matthiessen’s reflections on the state of existence and the western civilization and his appeal to learn the ancient oriental civilization.
