Taking the works of Anselm Kiefer, a German neo-expressionist artist, and the poems of the Jewish poet Paul Celan as examples, this paper attempts to explore the implied literary symbolic meaning behind the visual images of Kiefer’s works of art through the intertextual relationship between them. Thus, the multiple cultural metaphors related to national history, war trauma and collective memory in Celan’s work Todesfuge are revealed. The mutual mapping between the visual images of Kiefer’s works and Celan Fugue’s text is used to restart the study of intertextuality between post-war German art and poetry.
