摘要
借助既有研究成果和考古发掘资料,对西瓜的起源以及在世界范围内的传播进行探讨,明确西瓜属植物均起源于非洲大陆,食用甜味西瓜原产于非洲东北部的苏丹和埃及。古代埃及人最早将西瓜野生种驯化成栽培种,公元前2000年或者更早时候,尼罗河流域就已经出现西瓜和药西瓜。公元前13世纪以前,西瓜在古埃及地区已经得到普遍种植,并且食用的主要部分由瓜籽变成瓜瓤。西瓜首先在环地中海地区传播,之后陆续向西亚、中亚、南亚、南欧等地传播。
Based on the existing researches and archaeological studies,this article discusses the origin of watermelon and its worldwide distribution,and concludes that citrullus originated in Africa while the edible sweet watermelon was native to Sudan and Egypt in the northeast of Africa.It was the ancient Egyptians who first cultivated the wild species of watermelon.As early as 2000 BC or even earlier,citrulluslanatus and citrulluscolocynthis had been found in the Nile basin.Before1300 BC,watermelon was already widely cultivated in ancient Egypt,and people had accepted its pulp instead of its seeds.Watermelon then spread to the Mediterranean region.3000 years ago,the ancient Greeks began to plant watermelon.It was introduced to ancient Rome around the Christian era and later to West Asia,Central Asia,South Asia,Southern Europe and other places.
