Lingjiatan is one of the most important sites recording the process of social complexity along the lower reaches of Yangtze River. The three decades of work at Lingjiatan witnessed the phased changes of archaeological research and its dialectical relationship with discipline development and academic concepts. The archaeological work of the site has changed from accidental discovery to the special studies of jade articles, to the bottleneck period, and then to the changes of research focus from the jade articles to the settlements. This process reflects how the archaeological research of a site extends from the parts to the whole, and from objects to society. Especially in recent decade, under the goal of "Exploring the Living World", the Lingjiatan site has been investigated through large-scale regional systematic surveys, full-range archaeological drilling, and the application and reformation of methods and techniques. This work has achieved certain success in constructing regional prehistoric society and has also accumulated some experience, making Lingjiatan one of the typical research cases.
